Kim and I have made it to week 3! This week’s project was inspired by the artwork of Keren Kroul. Our assignment was to keep a dream log and create a painting based on our dreams. I think the intent behind the project is to get us to use our imagination and not to be bound by realism. While not specifically based on a dream, my painting tries to blur the lines between reality and fantasy, for a surreal effect. It was actually, in part, based on a book I read as a child called “Above the Root”.
Kim’s watercolor painting shows a whimsical scene of resting birds, a hot air balloon floating among the clouds, and a dreaming young woman. I love the swirls on the bird’s tails!
I really like the way the Keren Kroul left a lot of white, negative space in her paintings, rather than filling up the whole paper with color. I tried to incorporate that same style into my painting. I used ink and watercolor on 18″ x 24″ paper for this piece, and I’ve included a picture of the sketch before I painted, as well as, some close up shots of the details.
